Suspicious death

I discovered a thirteen-year-old Rhode Island Red hen dead this morning. I suspect fowl play and have notified the gárdaí. They are appealing for witnesses - possibly a rat or a canary - who might shed light upon the incident. The victim had no known enemies, apart from a Light Sussex cockerel whose amorous advances she had steadfastly resisted for years. Funeral plans on hold as the corpse has gone missing - dog looking very suspicious if you ask me - never noticed feathers in his nostrils before...
