Buzzard numbers.
Have you noticed how well Buzzards are doing? I luv to see these majestic birds soaring high up in family groups this time of year. Soon the family will disband and this years young will spend two seasons as loners before looking for a mate to repeat the cycle. Earlier this week a Buzzard flew over my plot and being harassed by the local Rooks it dropped the young Rabbit it was carrying. Much to the delight of my old Lab, which scoffed it before the rooks could get it. A memorable event.

I would love to see Buzzards around here. And Kites. Alas, there is neither. I have to make do with Kestrels, Sparrowhawks and Peregrines - along with the occasional Merlin, Hen Harrier and White-tailed Eagle.

Sorry to hear about your Doves Monst. Sparrowhawks are abundant around here also. Pigging out on the local Woodpigeon population judging by the piles of feathers found in the wood. They cant fly that fast and rely on ambush mostly. I have seen them flying close to the ground alongside a hedge only to soar over the hedge into a flock of Dunnocks on the other side. Not fast but cunning. Perhaps siting the cote in an open place so your birds can see the Hawk coming might help. No defence against the Peregrine of course. Good luck with your remaining Doves.

Yep, Sparrowhawks do love all kinds of pigeons. At least, the females do. Mine wreak havoc on the collared doves around the yard. But I find the males stick to smaller prey - robins, sparrows, finches etc. Thankfully, neither males nor females seem to bother my chickens - I raised over thirty this year, all running loose with their mothers from a week old, and no losses.

Loads of buzzards here around the west side of Meath. I've seen at least 5 different pairs in the last 6 months or so. They are truly magnificent.
The only drawback there is that they do prey on pets, like cats ; I have a neighbour who has seen a buzzard take 2 half grown cats and he wasn't very happy with that. In all honesty, I wouldn't be either, but I would be philosophical about it. Many people aren't and resort to poison, which is an awful pity.
There seems to be a serious resentment towards buzzards, very often unfounded. It's a bit like people hating cats or dogs for no reason
